Historical Highlights
McArthur Shipping has a long history being initially established in
Sydney on 9th September, 1908 whilst in reality was a continuation of an old-established
shipping, produce and general agency business conducted by W. & A. McArthur Limited.
The new firm had its Head Office at 15 Macquarie Place in Sydney from
1908 to 1931. The companys wharf was situated in Woolloomooloo Bay with both the
offices and the wharf having been taken over from the old firm of W. & A. McArthur.
The company acted as inward and outward agents having ample wharfage
accommodation to ensure prompt despatch of steamers consigned to their care. It maintained
a line of steamers loading from Australian ports to the Continent, London and Liverpool as
well as the East. It had established agencies throughout the East and was represented in
London by Messrs T. Lloyd & Co.
It was also represented in Brisbane by Messrs. Cleghorn & Hopkins
Ltd, in Melbourne by Messrs. W.M. Haughton & Co. and at Adelaide by Messrs. Bagot,
Shakes & Lewis Ltd.
The business operated as a private family company until 1982 when the
shareholding was acquired by Brambles Ltd. In 1987 a further change took place when the
company was acquired by the Owens Group Ltd. This has recently changed with the sale to
Meware Pty Ltd, the parent company of Hetherington Kingsbury Shipping Agency. |
